Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. said Monday it has agreed to acquire Golf Galaxy Inc. for about $225 million.
The announcement sent Golf Galaxy shares up $2.67, or 17.1 percent, to $18.32 in aftermarket trading on the INET electronic exchange, after retreating 17 cents to close at $15.65 on the Nasdaq.
Dick's shares rose $1.63, or 3.3 percent, to $50.55 in aftermarket trading, after adding 16 cents to close at $48.92 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Under the agreement, Golf Galaxy shareholders will receive $18.82 for each share of common stock. The offer represents a 20 percent premium over the company's Monday closing stock price.
The deal, which is subject to Golf Galaxy shareholder and regulatory approval, will be financed with Dick's existing credit facility. It is expected to close by Feb. 6.
In addition, Dick's said certain Golf Galaxy shareholders have agreed to vote 19.9 percent of the outstanding common stock in favor of the acquisition. Dick's said it expects the deal to be accretive in fiscal 2007.
Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Golf Galaxy currently operates 61 stores in 24 states, and sells golf equipment online and through a catalog. The company posted $250 million in sales for the year ended Aug. 26.
Peter J. Solomon Securities Co. Ltd. provided financial advisory services to Dick's in connection with the deal.

On the other hand, the tournament is leaded by the Sweden golfer Mathias Gronberg, with a total of 13 points, two points ahead of the Australians Stuart Appleby and John Senden and the American Stewart Cink and Tom Pernice Jr.

The organization of Malaga went to the event with an expositor of the Andalusian Golf Federation and the Spanish Tourism Office of Paris. They were very well visited during the four days that the event lasted. The main visitors were amateurs players, according to the Association reports.
During the event, association technicians met with tour-operators to explore the possibilities to improve the presence of the Costa del Sol in France: in the magazines and future actions of promotion.
The Association emphasized the growing of the French market: “it grows every year with a ratio between 8 and 10%”, which is because “golf is a sport which has more followers every day”.

I didn’t have any idols. My family were quite poor and we didn’t have much money, and we had to work to help our family. We had a television, but I didn’t watch it very often. I think that at that time, we didn’t know too much about life, we had less information and I don’t remember any idol. When I started as a caddie, at the age of 15, I came to know the world of golf, and then I did have some idols, just like Severiano Ballesteros. Well, also when I started playing golf, I was always astonished when I met a professional player at the club.

And whom do you admire now?

I still admire Seve and many other players. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger, who is a reference for the young as well as for the old. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player.... I have played with Greg Norman and the energy he transmits is incredible. But also Olazabal, Sergio....

The Sports Association has decided to extend their offer to young and elder people in the community. Therefore, the town council, in collaboration with “Club Campomar” will start a campaign for beginner golf courses for the little ones in town next march.

The association promotes a beginner school for children of 9 years who go to school in the center of the town. The courses will start on 7th of March and they will extend until the 31st of May. The courses are set up in sessions of an hour, each for 20 children, during all the mornings. For this, the Council will invite all the schools of Narón that are interested in participating in this sports initiative.

I like it really much. I would say, it is … different. I think that there could be done great things.

It is the first time you have come in this area, isn’t it?
Yes, I have never been here before.

But in Spain you have already designed a golf course, true?
Yes, years ago I designed in Barcelona 45 holes for the golf course El Prat de Llobregat.

And now, what are you doing more, playing or designing?
A bit of both of them. I intend to dedicate myself to both.

So you haven’t retired so fare. Nobody else shows himself that little on the golf courts.
I play much less than before. My back doesn’t hold hard work anymore and furthermore I am really busy with negotiations. Let’s say that I continue playing just a little bit...

In how many tournaments do you actually participate a year?
About 10 …

And golf courses? How many do you design?
Less than I would like to - (he bursts out laughing openly) but it is enough for living.

What is the last thing you have planned and designed before the golf courses you are occupied with now?
Before this one I have designed one in Ireland.

And in total, how many golf courts worldwide carry your distinctive stamp and this type of design?
Come on, I haven’t count them … But when I’m thinking about it … about 58 ones in total all over the 5 continents, but most of them are in the United States and in my country, in Australia.

What is the proportion?
Let’s say about 44 courts in the United States and about 12 ones in Australia. About the rest I am not quite sure.

I have just visited the sites of 3 Molinos Resort. When would you say it will be finished and ready for playing?
Well, if all goes on as planned and if there are no delays, I think the courts will be ready within a year and one and a half years…

One question just for curiosity: With what do you currently earn more money, playing or designing?
I think currently I earn more money on designing. Before it was the opposite, but things change …

In general, what do you think about the golf competition?
The American golf is prevailing over the European and Asian one. The tournaments of the PGA America attract European and Asian players and nowadays golf is played much more over there than here.

And what about the women? I heard that they now want to participate in the same tournaments as the masculine players, and they have already played some of them.
Well, it doesn’t seem to be a bad idea to me. But always the ones who win in the court are the good players. What I don’t like about it is that some use it just for marketing reasons.

Have you ever played with women?
In exhibition tournaments, yes, over there in the 80ies and 90ies. I didn’t have any problems with them. In a contest it will be another aspect, but as I repeat, I don’t see any inconvenience against women playing in men’s contests provided they have gained their right on the court.

(I ask him if he would like to talk about golf in Spain, which I assume he knows quite well, at least he knows the best players. I’m in the mood to ask.)

Well, there are still differences. Woods is without a doubt the best golf player at the moment and it will be really difficult to knock him down from the pedestal on which he has installed himself.

Who is the best player in the history for you?
Without a doubt, Jack Nicklaus.

His short time goals are to reach the professional level of golf, but he takes it relaxed, without any pressure. “The time will tell us. Town councillor, Mª Carmen Asin, gives her favourable vote yesterday to build this urban programme. The meeting lasted three hours and the decision put the end of a more than 7 years debate. The project is about a construction of almost 2.100.000 m2 of the Cuadro de Santiago area.

The inscription period for new players begins on 19th of December.

Once the update for registered players in the first Golf class is over, the National Center Golf School offers 72 vancant posts.
The distribution of these posts is the following way:

176 posts for adults between monday and friday
71 posts for adults on weekends
25 posts for children under 16 (only on weekends)

The cost of the class is 144€ for adults and 84€ for children. This amount must be payed when the inscription is signed. The price includes club loan for classes, but not the balls, except for children.

The course consists on 12 classes of 50 minutes each one, at the rate of one class per week. The beginning of the course is on 9th january of 2006 and it will end twelve weeks after.

Gran Canaria aspires to become the World Referent of Golf Tourism.

The president of Corporation of Gran Canaria, José Manuel Soria has declared that “the island has shown its capacity of organization and its great power to become in a World Referent of Golf tourism”.
From next monday, Gran Canaria becomes into the world capital of Golf thanks to the opening of the Congress Centre of Maspalomas to celebrate The International Golf Travel Market Exposition.
Gran Canaria Islands competed with Miami, Costa Rica and Costa Brava to be the venue of this international meeting. IGTM celebrates in Spain for the first time and, until next thursday, will collect more than 1000 professional businessmen from 50 countries. This great exposition gathers about 360 display stands.

The Austrian magazine specialized in Golf : “Die Golferin” will publish in its edition of March an article about the Costa del Sol as a touristic destination.

The coast of Malaga recieved the visit of the writer boss of the magazine, and she organized a circuit of several golf courses of the province, the objective was to show the facilities to practise this sport written in six pages of article. The advertising cost of this article is very important because it is a magazine which has only one edition per year in the entire country and it is sent to 45.000 players.

La Cuesta golf Course and La Rasa de Berbes, pioneers of the North of the region.

The golf courses of La Cuesta, in Llanes and La Rasa de Berbes in Ribadesella, have been opened several years ago and they are an important economic factor for the region of Asturias.

The golf course of Berbes was created in 1994, and since then, its growth has not stop. Nowadays, it counts with 210 partners. “This year it has reached a mayor adquisition of partners, we think this is because of the improvement of the infrastructure”, said Luis Pablo González, president of the golf course, who announced the access to the golf course will be improved next spring, 2006. This golf course has 11 holes and it is so frequently visited in summer.

In Llanes, the Town council created the golf course in 1999, which was managed by The golf Course La Cuesta until last 1st of July. Nowadays, the Town council is who manages the golf course, although they forecast that this management will be provisional. The golf course counts with a total of 1154 players, of which 1.025 are partners. The mayority of subscribers are from Asturias, followed by Madrid, Cantabria and Vizcaya.

VI golf tournament for the Down Syndrom

Like every year, this tournament will be celebrated next saturday 26th november in Miraflores Golf Club. It is becoming a great classic in this club and each time it is getting more acceptance of the public.
This charity tournament celebrated with the support of the “Asociación Síndorme de Down de Málaga”, has the unique objective of collecting money for this organization, that makes people become more conscious of the illness and to make it more present in our society and each of its sectors.
Last year, they collected 8.000€, thanks to the Golf Club Miraflores, members and trading partners, who unselfishly contributed to the tournament and to a raffle in the awards presentation. This year, we are optimistic and we will try to exceed this amount, because it is so necessary to this organization to help the affected people.
This tournament began to collect money to integrate affected people by this syndrome in the society, to develop their capacities and to be as autonomous as possible.
The « Asociation de Sindrome de Down de Málaga » counts on this tournament, in order to find new ways to finance the association, because golf is very important in our country and this sport has a lot of fans. Finally the association is so grateful to those who unselfishly support its work.

Sotogrande is the first golf course in Europe designed by Robert Trent Jones. It is considered one of the best 100 golf courses in the world. It has a distance of 6.224 metres and although it has large fairways and little semirough, the lakes and fast greens make this golf course a good opportunity to show the talent of the players.

The Official Gazette of the Province, confirmes the forthcoming construction of two golf courses, three five-stars hotels and 785 luxury villas, distributed in an area of about 1.000 hectares of plot in Ronda.

Antonio Marín, Mayor of Ronda, has declared “it is a great opportunity for the city, because it increases the tourism and sport offer of the province”. Furthermore, the complex will create a large offer of employment. Marín calms down to those who are worried of the possible troubles to the ecosystem which this project may cause. He insisted that “the most strict legality, including the irrigation of the facilities with recycled water” is going to be applied.
